So at the beginning of the school year, Peanut's teacher had a sign-up sheet that asked us how our child would get home. The options were pick-up, daycare, after school care, or walking. I originally chose that I would pick up but then noticed on the first day how long the line was and the frustrations that amounted at the 3 way stop that was backed up. I left a note for the teacher on day 2 that she would walk to a designated spot. Ever since then, that was where she met us. It is straight down the street and the only place she crosses a street is where there is a crossing guard to help her across. We can see her most of the walk because it is a straight street and she has a bright pink backpack. So fast forward to today ... 8 WEEKS later.
I am napping today because I slept like poo last night and have to work tonight. Jeremy was willing to pick up Peanut but he would have to go back to work. So when I got the call from Crestview at 3:40pm (30 minutes AFTER school got out), my first fear was that Jer was stuck in traffic and I had slept through his phone call to me. Boy was I wrong. It was some lady from the school telling me that Peanut was still at the school because someone she occasionally walks home with was staying after school. I was like, um, okay well she could have still walked. That is when I was informed that they don't let kids walk home by themselves. I shot out of my bed. Excuse me, since when?!
1. My daughter has walked to our designated spot since the beginning of school.
2. When told this, the woman was able to tell me the designated spot so I KNOW my daughter told her that she was supposed to go there.
3. Why did she wait until 3:40pm to tell me?! *This was the BIGGEST thing that upset me*
So, I had to call my husband to let him know that the school wouldn't release my daughter until we showed up. Lucky for Jer, he HAD finished work and was able to just come home but that did not simmer my emotions.
I can not, for the life of me, figure out why my child wasn't allowed to walk OR why I didn't get a call when they knew that her sometimes walking partner wasn't walking home. Also, her sometimes walking partner is in Kindergarten and walks by herself! Oh, and the person who kept Peanut wasn't a teacher ... according to Peanut. I think though, if I am thinking of the right person, she works in the office and helps direct cars in the AM & PM. If they were concerned, then they could have called me at 3 and said, Peanut's normal walking party is staying after school, should we send her out by herself or would you prefer to pick up. We normally discourage children walking by themselves. Then I could have known ahead of time there was a problem and two, I would have had a choice!
So, I am waiting for the emotions to simmer so I can write a decent note to the school. I will take Peanut to school and she will take the note in. GRRRRRRR
