Thanksgiving over ... Bring on Christmas

I am a pretty big stickler on NO Christmas until after Thanksgiving. I know some people have no qualms with listening to Christmas music or putting up lights before Thanksgiving. I am not one of those. For me, Christmas belongs AFTER Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a very important holiday that should not be swept under the rug. Thanksgiving is how our country started. We should be thankful for all we have been given. Thanksgiving is the one time that we remembered to be thankful for how we were helped and fed. Our country is always such a give-me give-me country and it upsets me that the ONE time of year when we are to sit and remember everything that is good in our lives and how it came to be, people want to shove it aside too. While I have no problem working on Christmas gifts before hand (or they won't get done), I think that all the music and all the Santa appearances, and all the holiday hoopla can wait until after the 4th Thursday in November.

Today was the first Sunday of advent. I didn't have my kids home but I have been spending time today plotting and planning how I want to be prepared for next year. I am going to work on getting an advent calendar the children can make and I can fill. Working on setting up an advent wreath that the kids can light each Sunday and then we will have a lesson. We will be teaching the children about St. Nicholas as my husband spent a great deal of time in Germany and his past means a lot to him. We hope to have the kids clean the house on Sunday in preparation for his arrival and shoes out on Dec. 5th.

I am excited to be home schooling during this season as I can teach all the reasons behind symbols and answer questions as they come. While December 23rd will bring the 10 yr anniversary of the loss of a very important person in my life, I hope to teach my children what she taught us. Christmas is the time to get together, put hatred aside, and remember what the season is all about. I remember living nativity scenes and plays. I am hoping to hunt down The Best Christmas Pageant Ever because I think it is a GREAT play but teaches a lot. I doubt we will put a tree up this year but it is mainly because Monkey is into EVERYTHING right now and I don't feel like fighting with one more thing. lol Welcome to the holiday season and I hope everyone has a blessed end of the year!
