R - Reading

I feel like the Little Engine that Could. I am thinking of all the reasons why I want to get through this and actually accomplish it. Why? Because I RARELY accomplish things I start. *sigh* So, today's letter (for me) is R. I want to touch on reading with your children.

With technology today, more kids are staring at screens than reading. I must admit that by the end of the weekend, every one of my children will have a portable electronic device. HOWEVER, they also have set times they can use it and reading is always encouraged in BOOK form! Not one of my children complain either! Peanut did for a while ... she was VERY behind on reading because she didn't want to let anyone see that she had trouble. I did not let that slow us down though. We tried multiple tactics and finally found something that worked. Once we did, she was in the race to catch back up. She is very proud to say that she is almost a full two grades above her level now and still going.

What I am trying to say is there is NO reason that you shouldn't get your child to read. Read to your children before bed, find out what their likes are, and encourage the behavior!

Okay ... so what books do I recommend for what ages?

Birth to 3 years

2 years to 5 years

PreK to 2nd Grade

Upper Elementary School

Middle School

High School

So ... what books have you had your children start reading? Do you have a reading routine where your kids read to you or you to them? Let me know!
