Clean Oven - Without the Chemicals

I know I am not alone in HATING the chore of cleaning the oven. I also hate that it smells SO bad and then you have to stick your head into the oven to scrub the back part, which causes you to inhale the fumes. I was delighted to find something that works wonders on a filthy stove.

You will need:
  • Vinegar
  • Water
  • Baking Soda
  • Iodized Salt
To start, you will want to mix the vinegar and water in a spray bottle. You want 1 part vinegar to 2 parts water. Take the racks out of the oven and spray the vinegar water all over the oven surface. Next, sprinkle baking soda over the vinegar and focus on the spots with heavy grease stains. Sprinkle the salt over the baking soda, and then spray another coating of vinegar water. Let it sit overnight to allow the vinegar and baking soda to work.

The next morning, take a sponge that has a scour side and some warm soapy water. Wipe off the baking soda mixture, scrubbing where it is needed. That's it!

Mine will need another treatment as soon as I have my massive baking task done later this week (or next weekend). The best part about this is I did not have to worry about where my children were because it is not toxic.

  1. Hello Heather.

I wholeheartedly agree that using non-toxic ingredients makes it so much easier when you have kids around. Same goes for pets, too. No noxious fumes or poisonous chemicals to worry about that way!

I too have used some of the very same ingredients to clean my oven out as I write about green cleaning and often come up with my own eco-friendly cleaning recipes. They really do work amazingly well! Instead of applying the vinegar and baking soda at the same time, I often apply a baking soda slurry (i.e., baking soda and water) to the inside of my oven and let it sit for quite awhile (sometimes overnight). Then later I clean it up and use vinegar, because vinegar neutralizes baking soda and gets rid of any remaining traces of grease.

  2. Karen,

This is the 3rd tip I have found for using vinegar. Until last year, I never realized how important vinegar is for cleaning. I am excited because the oven does need cleaning. I will use your recipe and I know it will do the job well.

  3. It is great to use natural cleaners! I use vinegar and baking soda all the time! I am still not so good and I need to find information for the different uses but I feel very satisfied with the results for now!
