Well, Peanut has had to face the cold hard fact that she is lactose intolerant ... or at the very least, very sensitive. She drank a glass of milk today, not even all of it and she has been ill the rest of the day. I would think it was the milk but Bullfrog drank the exact same milk and more of it and is still fine. She doesn't have a fever or any other symptoms. We knew there was a very strong possibility of this as she was extremely lactose sensitive from birth to about 18 months. We thought she had grown out of it though since she has had cheese, ice cream, milk, etc since then with relatively few problems.
The past few months though, we started to notice she became more and more intolerant. I am not sure if she can have small amounts of lactose or not, so we are starting her on the cleanse of no dairy for 2 months. This will be incredibly hard for not only her but me as a mother trying to figure out what she can and can not have. We are going to start with the major culprits: chocolate, liquid milk, cheese, sour cream, ice cream and yogurt. As far as bread or other things that use powdered milk or very limited amount of milk in it and it has been cooked (cookies, etc) we are going to try letting her have.
I am going to attempt to keep up with my menu plans again but we will see how things go since I start teaching tomorrow bright and early!
Sunday - Tater Topped Casserole
Monday - Hamburgers with Tomato, Melon, Cucumber Salad
Tuesday - Sandwiches and granola bars *T-Bone's Game*

Friday - Packed meal that we will take to the zoo for Sunset Safari
Saturday - Date night ... this is a spur of the moment dinner usually for us. :)
Smart Balance Light is lactose free (for a butter substitute). Breyers Lactose free (or low lactose) vanilla ice cream is good. Rice milk(I have a lactose intolerant friend. Can't even have lactose cooked in baked goods!)
ReplyDeleteThat is good to know. With my IBS, I'm not supposed to have dairy either so this is just kind of pushing our house to be more and more dairy free. We MUST keep some dairy in the house for the boys. We have a local grocery store that has a HUGE dairy free (including mock cheeses) and gluten free section. I just need to make our bills work with the cost. We really like almond milk over rice milk, however rice milk is great to cook with. Adella is actually taking it pretty well.
