Sunday morning Jeremy finished our shoes while the kids went to church with the other adults. Somehow I missed that in the email, but mom had made the kids some clothes so they were able to go. Jeremy and I took this time to completely load up the van, minus a change of clothes for the kids and our cooler full of food. When everyone came back we had the kids change and ate. We also had everyone run through the bathrooms, but a little girl decided she didn't need to go. *yes this is important for later*
The first place we headed to was the Frake's place. Which is also owned by Steve & Jane Fry. They have done MASSIVE amounts of work to this place as when we first started going we walked through a field because we had no idea there was a sidewalk going into the place. There was a reason we called it the Secret Garden. My sister and a friend of the family have come to the garden a lot to take photos of the place. Tami has even entered some pictures in the Riley County 4-H Fair. It is just a very beautiful spot. Now for the tie in to the not going potty story. My daughter suddenly had to go potty, badly. So, I took her through the field, which she bawled clear through because it was spooky and the grass was touching her arms, and then to the outhouse. Oh my goodness, she FREAKED OUT. There were roly polys on the ground. She would have nothing to do with that bathroom. I was getting a little more than irritated at her because we hiked all this way and then she didn't want to go potty because of some bugs she plays with at home, were on the ground. So, we had to drive back to the Sherman House, then drove back to the Frake's House, only to go back to the Sherman House for some others to use the restroom. *sigh* Lots of wasted gas.
After everyone was through the potty, we were off to grandma's old farm. The Young's now own it and shortly after they bought it in 1990, they burned the house due to the fact it was not salvageable. However, we know it didn't fall right away, but it wasn't standing in 1999. So, the pictures I have are of after it collapsed. I thought we went and saw the farm in 2004 and the building was there, but my mom told me that it wasn't there after grandpa's funeral in 1999. Anywho, after we looked at the foundation for the house, and the kids played with the dogs a bit, we headed over to the barn. WHERE the infamous grasshopper story occurred. I do have to state right now that Peanut CAN laugh about it now. As we were walking to the barn, a grasshopper flew through the air and clipped my nose, which caught me off guard and felt like someone had flicked me. I said Ouch, Stupid Grasshopper. Peanut wigged out. She tore out with her hands in the air and screaming "no, no grasshoppers, I don't like grasshoppers" and she covered about an acre in no time flat. We were rolling. Yeah, she didn't really talk to any of us after that. So now, we will be giving her an occasional grasshopper themed item as it is our favorite story of hers of ALL time.
We went home shortly after this. We did go see the inside of the chicken coop turned into a house, but that was it. On our way out of town we stopped at 2 places. The Prudence Crandall historical marker and then my favorite drive-in: Toot's Drive-In. If we had extra cash we probably would have grabbed some ice cream.
It was a great trip overall and I can't wait until next year.
