Social Media

Social Media, such as Facebook or Twitter, are a great way to promote one's business or keep in touch with family and friends. People have been flocking to social media sites with great enthusiasm and it has been a race to keep children and privacy of the user protected. There are debates on whether or not Facebook has begun to step over the lines of what is considered safe and what is stalking. The biggest debate, however, has been to bullying.

Bullying used to be tied to playgrounds and mean kids. Bullying used to be calling names and jokes going too far. Unfortunately, bullying now is leading to shootings and suicides. Many people who have dealt with bullying can become depressed and withdrawn. Not many people talk about being bullied because they think that people will think lesser of them.

I am here to tell you that *I* will think nothing less of you. I am a 32 year old woman who has dealt with some NASTY bully tactics over the past few years. I left a job because of a bully and he was later forced to resign. Then I just recently dealt with some serious bullying via Facebook. This was not on the main wall where people could see it ... it was in private messages. There was a HUGE debate on exactly what the connotations were supposed to be, but I know what it read to me. That is all that matters, period. I had a couple of options ...

  1. Let this group of women get to me and ball up and bawl.
  2. Block them and ignore them
I went with option number 2 and sought refuge with some friends that I KNEW I could trust. Had them read the posts to make sure I wasn't over reacting and that the stuff said wasn't truthful. Honestly, sometimes the truth does hurt but I am pretty particular about flat out lies. What was said was completely uncalled for AND it was from people who did NOT know me. It was by a group of women who have nothing  better to do than pick on other women who are only online. This is bullying AND it is bullying of adults. This is 100% not acceptable. Have no fear, the women in question have been reported for harassment because they are not on my friends list nor are they in any group that I am a member of. I have had no contact with these women for MONTHS.

If you feel like you have been the victim of cyber bullying, or if you want to learn more about cyber bullying, here is a website to check out: http://www.stopcyberbullying.org/

Just remember, you are not alone and your children are not alone. Social Media sites are a place that should be enjoyable and a way to branch out. You should not fear being attacked by anyone at anytime.
